SelfSuff

The Rise of the Infra-Self

Civilization has entered the garage. Professor Yourtle arrives expecting to find it in schools, hospitals, factories, governments, and markets. Instead, he finds Artie—one person coordinating learning, making, repair, care, and creation from an ordinary workshop.

The categories fail

The book begins with a location problem. Civilization’s functions have not vanished from institutions; they have become operable at smaller scales—inside people, households, tables, gardens, and garages.

Professor Yourtle · Preliminary finding
“The functions had not disappeared from civilization. They had changed location.”

Record 02

Twelve functions move closer

Each chapter examines one civilizational capability becoming more locally operable—not as an escape from society, but as a more deliberate way to participate in it.

01

Self-Entertainment

Become a source of culture, play, ritual, and joy—not only an audience.

02

Self-Expression

Shape signal, style, voice, and identity without outsourcing the self.

03

Self-Knowledge

Use mirrors, records, and AI without promoting any mirror to master.

04

Self-Learning

Turn questions into disciplined inquiry while remaining open to correction.

05

Self-Making

Convert imagination into testable artifacts—and let reality edit back.

06

Self-Care

Maintain body, mind, energy, and operating rhythm without confusing metrics with health.

07

Self-Repair

Recover agency when systems fail, while knowing when repair must be entrusted.

08

Self-Provisioning

Understand and strengthen the essential flows that sustain ordinary life.

09

Self-Navigation

Choose among possible futures and turn direction into livable days.

10

Self-Economy

Create value without turning the whole self, household, or relationship into a product.

11

Self-Connection

Become more capable without becoming less reachable, reciprocal, or human.

12

Self-Meaning

Govern capability by what it contributes, protects, and serves.

Inside Artie’s workshop

Artie is the integrated Infra-Agent: one accountable human judgment center coordinating unlike participants and a dense technological periphery.

01

Tools do not equal capability.

A workshop, AI system, robot, dashboard, or fabrication machine becomes useful only when joined to skill, maintenance, correction, and responsibility.

02

Speed needs imported challenge.

Integration lets Artie move rapidly from question to model to test. It also creates bottleneck, overload, and the risk of elegant private error.

03

Animals remain living participants.

Horst changes time. Mabel invalidates control assumptions. Neither is a device, sensor, prop, or extension.

04

The institution remains present.

Public knowledge, standards, utilities, markets, professionals, law, and infrastructure still support every local act. The interface becomes small; civilization remains large.

Operating rule

Four ways to depend wisely

SelfSuff does not rank independence above dependence. It asks for the proper disposition of each capability.

Move inward

Generate

Develop enough local skill, judgment, infrastructure, or practice to create, understand, maintain, or govern the function.

Accept well

Receive

Welcome expertise, culture, care, service, correction, and support when receipt is sensible, humane, or simply better.

Distribute

Share

Place capability across family, friends, neighbors, communities, networks, and collaborative systems when private holding becomes brittle.

Place responsibly

Entrust

Deliberately hand the function to specialists, institutions, or public systems when authority, expertise, scale, or independent accountability belongs there.

“The proper opposite of helplessness is not isolation. It is capable participation.”
